“Snow Problem for our Coos”

After December’s torrential rain, January arrived with freezing ground, iced-over water troughs, and deep snow – far more than we’ve seen in recent years. Keeping fresh water flowing and food accessible has been a real challenge, but Andy, Ewan and Donald have taken it all in their stride.

Highland cattle are superbly adapted to winter conditions thanks to their remarkable double coat. A long, oily outer layer repels snow and rain, while a soft, woolly undercoat traps insulating air, allowing them to withstand freezing temperatures with ease – often with snow melting gently off their backs. Their iconic fringe, known as a dossan, also protects their eyes from the elements, making them perfectly suited to harsh Highland weather.

Unsurprisingly, their appetite has increased significantly, with a 20-bale hay delivery disappearing in no time at all. This is supplemented with a special Vitality Bucket lick to provide essential vitamins and minerals that summer pasture would normally supply. And for an extra treat, each of them enjoys a scoop of specialist cow meal – which they absolutely love!
